Celtic Solstice Almost Finished

Celtic Solstice is almost finished. I decided to stop this evening before I got too tired to care about things such as accurate seam allowances, etc. The green piece of fabric on the left is the proposed border fabric. Bonnie's instructions call for a narrow border finishing at 1.5 inches. Since I think something a little wider is in order and because I want my quilt to be a bit larger, I am going to scale the final border up to something in the order of 5 to 6 inches. Here's a closeup of the fabric:

  1. great quilt and the border really pulls out the border on the main piece

  2. Well, I must say I would not add the wide green border just as is. The dark blue triangle border looks like an outer edge because it is so dark, and the green feels too light in comparison. Also, because everything is densely pieced, the wide stretch of the same almost solid fabric doesn't feel right.

I think what I would do would be to add another round of the light fabrics that are just inside the blue border, in the same width. Then, I might choose a highly patterned fabric that is predominantly red and/or orange, like the triangles in the current outer border, for a final border and the binding. Red reads quite dark, I'm finding, so it won't be dwarfed by the blue border.

    It's looking great so far!

    1. I agree with you but it's done now. I had no success finding a green fabric with the right colors in it. I actually thought the green would calm everything down, but it is too much I think. Oh well, live and learn. Thanks for the feedback.

    2. Oh well! I think each quilt gives us a new idea for the next one. :D

  3. I think that green border really brings out the greens in your quilt top. I like it! Great work!

  4. Mary Ellen, I didn't get a chance to tell you how beautiful your quilt is. These photos don't do this quilt justice at all. I think your borders turned out great. You've inspired me! So, tonight, I'm trying to finish up my HSTs with fat quarters I purchased last Friday afternoon--my stash was sorely lacking the right yellows and greens. I'm setting a goal to get my top finished in time for our February guild meeting. Therefore, I should have no problem getting it quilted and bound in time for our next Quilt Expo. Wish me luck!
